Things to Consider When Buying Your Next Home…The Family Home?

You may be thinking about moving to a bigger house, maybe a house where you can start a family. There’s are a few things that you might want to consider when purchasing your next house.

What is a MUST for your next house?

It can be good to list your priorities for your next house such as if you want it to have a garden or outdoor space, how many bedrooms, a room for a home office or a playroom or space for a dining room table.

Listing everything that you want a house to have can help narrow your search down and you will have a clear vision of what you would like your future house to be.

However, sometimes it can be hard for a property to have everything that you want. It’s a good idea to list what you want in priority order so you can focus on what you can and can’t compromise on.

Budget – what can you afford?

Before you go house hunting and have your heart set on a certain property, it’s good to figure out how much you can afford and what’s in your budget. You can use an online calculator for a rough idea, or you can speak to a mortgage broker like ourselves, we will complete an affordability check so you know exactly how much you can afford.

With your affordability amount in your mind, it might be worth thinking about how much you can afford in the future with additional costs such as childcare and increased food shop costs. You may opt to go for a lower priced house or have a look at your outgoings and see where you can make some cuts.

Location – Schools & Childcare

Thinking about the location of your family home is important especially if you have children or have already children. Something to think about is where the nearest schools or nurseries are or whether you would like to move closer to family to help with childcare.

Other factors to think about is where the local shops are, transport links, how long your commute to work would be, nearest hospital and doctor surgery are.

Lastly, when you go to view a house it might be worth having a walk around the local area, see if its somewhere that busy, have local parks, near busy roads and if you have the opportunity, meet your neighbours so you know who they are before you move in.

Is there space to grow?

Thinking about the long term, can you vision the house being large enough for your family to grow? For example, you might find a three bedroom house with a large garden so there’s potential to extend and make it into a four bedroom house or have a bigger space downstairs.

A house that has flexibility can allow you to create space to tailor around your family’s needs. However, this is if you wish to stay at a property for a long time instead of moving to a bigger house.
